Re: Education at the National Level
If you read the previous blog (and if not, WHY NOT?), then you understand that the current budget proposals by our legislature are little more than an attempt to thwart President Obama's plan to boost educational spending. They basically want to nullify Obama's plan to boost education with federal support by withdrawing an equal amount of state support.
I.e., They want to impose their budget cuts before the federal money arrives. That way, when the funding (in 2 years) goes away, those cuts will be fixed. If they can't get their budget cuts approved before the money arrives...well...then we have the money. Why so many cuts?
Stop your legislature from dismantling education in the state. Ideally, the state should continue to fund education--alongside the boost in funding from the Fed. Those monies, when combined, will lead to a better educated populace that is better situated to manage our future economy.
Anything less--in the name of temporary stability--is short-sighted, selfish and ignorant of just how "short" our sights need to be.
Education Issues at the National Level
This article was published in the NY Times earlier today.
Prett much covers what I mentioned in my previous blog, but with more detail.
Apparently, the New Republican Looks Less Like Reagan and More Like...Lenin?
After reviewing the Joint Budget Committee’s, as well as the Barry Goldwater Insititute’s, recommendations for cutting Arizona’s budget, let’s just say I’m glad I’m not a child anymore. The only thing these reports, often reading like updated versions of Jonathon Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” fail to do to children is alter the state license plate that reads, “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child,” to one that says, “It shouldn’t cost a dime to raise one.”
Actually, content IS coming
I promise, after this weekend, there will be new content on this blog. I finally have a few hours to actually write something thoughtful. And, considering the week that just passed (with, I don't know, its offerering of a new President and, possibly more important, an OLD president, I have plenty to write about).
But don't sit around waiting for me. There's plenty to get jabbing about, and, from what I hear, that's what people like to do on this thing we call the Internet.
And did any of you hear something about the Cardinals not stinking it up?
Hey Group
Thanks for joining the group, and now you're probably all wondering what next? Well, while I could (and likely WILL) expound upon the vital qualities of "Mike-ness," as I like to call it, in truth I'm hoping this will be a good place just to talk politics and social issues--and, of course, anything related to worker rights in the state and nation.
I'm working on a column or two or three that I'll post soon, but, for some reason, I just haven't had the time in the last few days to finish them up. I don't know...something about a DES election and an historic organizing effort got in the way.
